Are You Asking God for a Sign When He’s Already Given You an Answer?

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.” — James 1:5–6 (KJV)
Have you ever asked God for a sign about something you already knew the answer to?
Maybe you prayed about it.
Then you prayed about it again.
Then you asked God for confirmation.
Then another confirmation.
And maybe just one more sign to be sure.
Sometimes we genuinely need direction from God. There are decisions in life where we don't know what to do, and seeking His wisdom through prayer is exactly what we should do.
But sometimes the problem isn't that God hasn't answered.
Sometimes we simply don't like the answer.
Maybe His Word has already made something clear.
Maybe you've felt conviction about a situation for months.
Maybe God has given you wisdom through prayer, circumstances, or godly counsel, but you're still waiting for something that will give you permission to choose the answer you wanted instead.
We have to be careful that seeking confirmation doesn't become a way of delaying obedience.
Think about how easy it is to say, “God, just give me a sign,” when what we really mean is, “God, please give me a different answer.”
We may ask Him to show us whether we should leave something He has already shown us isn't good for us.
We may ask whether we should forgive when Scripture has already told us to forgive.
We may ask whether we should obey something in His Word while hoping for an exception that makes obedience more comfortable.
At that point, we aren't really searching for direction.
We're searching for permission.
And there is a difference.
God certainly can confirm things in our lives. He can open doors, close doors, use circumstances, and give us wisdom when we're uncertain.
But our faith cannot depend on constantly receiving signs.
Jesus said, “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” — John 20:29 (KJV)
Faith sometimes requires moving forward without receiving one more sign.
It means trusting what God has already revealed.
It means obeying even when the answer isn't convenient.
It means accepting that God's wisdom is greater than our desires.
James tells us that when we lack wisdom, we should ask God for it. But the passage also tells us to ask in faith, without wavering.
There comes a point when we have to stop repeatedly asking and start trusting.
That doesn't mean we should rush every decision or assume every thought in our mind came from God. We should always measure what we believe against Scripture, pray for wisdom, and use discernment.
But when God's Word is already clear, we don't need a sign to override it.
And when God has given us the wisdom we asked for, continuing to search for another answer can keep us stuck in a place He may be calling us to move beyond.
Sometimes the prayer isn't, “God, show me what to do.”
Sometimes it needs to become, “God, give me the courage to do what You've already shown me.”
Because the answer we're waiting for may have already been given.
