What If God Is Growing You Instead of Changing Your Situation?

"My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." — James 1:2–4 (KJV)
Every one of us has prayed for God to change something.
A difficult job.
A strained relationship.
Financial hardship.
A health challenge.
A season of waiting.
When life becomes difficult, our first instinct is to ask God to remove the problem. We pray for our circumstances to change because we believe that's where the answer is.
But what if God is using that very situation to change you?
It's not the answer most of us hope for, but throughout Scripture, we see that God is often more concerned with developing our character than changing our circumstances.
James reminds us to "count it all joy" when we face trials. That doesn't mean we should enjoy suffering or pretend that pain doesn't hurt. It means we can find hope in knowing that God is accomplishing something greater through our trials.
Every challenge strengthens our faith. Every disappointment teaches us to trust Him more deeply, and every season of waiting develops a patience that comfort never could.
Throughout Scripture, God prepared His people before He positioned them. Joseph endured betrayal and imprisonment before leading Egypt. David spent years as a shepherd and a fugitive before becoming king. God used every season to prepare them for what was ahead.
God rarely wastes a season.
Even when we can't see His purpose, He is refining our faith, strengthening our character, and teaching us to depend on Him in ways comfort never could.
Sometimes we become so focused on asking, "Lord, when will this change?" that we forget to ask, "Lord, what are You trying to teach me through this?"
That one question can completely change the way we view our circumstances.
Instead of only praying for God to remove the obstacle, ask Him to reveal what He wants to produce in you while you're walking through it.
Maybe He's developing patience.
Maybe He's strengthening your faith.
Maybe He's teaching you humility.
Maybe He's preparing you for something greater than you can imagine.
Whatever season you're in today, remember this:
God cares about your circumstances, but He also cares about the person you're becoming.
Your current situation may only last for a season.
The character God is building in you can last a lifetime.
So don't lose heart if life isn't changing as quickly as you hoped.
God may be doing His greatest work where you least expect it.
He isn't just changing your situation.
He may be growing you.
