When Entertainment Becomes Mockery

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." — Galatians 6:7 (KJV)

Laughter is a gift from God.

It brings joy, relieves stress, and reminds us that life doesn't always have to be serious. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a good joke or finding humor in everyday moments.

But what happens when entertainment begins to make light of the very things God calls holy?

Recently, I watched a comedy sketch that portrayed God and the Christian faith in a way that made me pause. It wasn't because I don't appreciate humor. It was because the line between comedy and mockery had been crossed.

It made me ask myself a question:

Have we become so comfortable with entertainment that we no longer recognize when something is dishonoring God?

As believers, we live in a world where God's name, His Word, and even Jesus Himself are often used as punchlines. What once would have been considered offensive is now applauded as bold, creative, or simply "just a joke."

But God's holiness is not a joke.

Galatians reminds us, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked." Those words are just as true today as they were when they were first written.

That doesn't mean we should respond with anger or hatred every time we see something offensive. Jesus never called us to react like the world. He called us to be different.

Instead, moments like these should cause us to examine our own hearts.

What are we laughing at?

What are we supporting?

What are we becoming comfortable with simply because everyone else is?

Sometimes the greatest danger isn't openly rejecting God. It's slowly becoming desensitized to things that dishonor Him.

The world will continue to produce entertainment that doesn't reflect God's truth. That shouldn't surprise us.

The greater question is whether we, as followers of Christ, are guarding our hearts.

Philippians 4:8 reminds us to think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. That verse isn't about avoiding every movie, television show, or comedian. It's about developing discernment and asking whether what we're consuming is drawing us closer to Christ or quietly pulling us away.

Our laughter reveals more than we sometimes realize.

As Christians, we have an opportunity to respond differently. We don't have to attack people or argue online. We can choose to honor God with our words, our actions, and even our entertainment choices.

Culture will always change.

God's holiness never will.

The next time you find yourself watching something that makes light of God, ask yourself one simple question:

Am I laughing because it's funny...or because I've become comfortable with something that grieves God's heart?

That question may change more than your playlist or watch list.

It may change your heart.
