When You're Tired of Being the Strong One

When You're Tired of Being the Strong One

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (KJV)

Have you ever reached a point where you're tired of being the strong one? The person everyone depends on, the one who always finds a way to make things work, the one who keeps going even when you're struggling inside?

Sometimes we carry so much that we don't even realize how exhausted we've become. We smile when we're overwhelmed, encourage others when we need encouragement ourselves, and tell everyone we're fine because explaining how we really feel seems like another burden.

But who do you turn to when you're the one who needs strength?

The truth is, even the strongest people get tired. And being a person of faith doesn't mean we're supposed to have everything together all the time.

Somewhere along the way, we can begin believing that being strong means never showing weakness, never asking for help, and never admitting when life feels overwhelming. But God never asked us to pretend we're stronger than we are.

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus extends an invitation to those who are weary and carrying heavy burdens. He doesn't tell them to work harder, hide their struggles, or figure everything out before coming to Him. He simply invites them to come and find rest.

Think about Elijah. In 1 Kings 19, after experiencing a great victory, Elijah became overwhelmed, afraid, and exhausted. He reached a point where he felt he couldn't continue. Yet God didn't respond by condemning him for being tired. Instead, Elijah was given rest and nourishment before continuing his journey.

What a powerful reminder that sometimes we need to stop pushing ourselves and acknowledge that we need rest.

We often think resting means we're falling behind, but rest isn't a lack of faith. Neither is asking for help, setting healthy boundaries, or admitting that we're struggling.

Sometimes we become so focused on being available for everyone else that we neglect our own well-being. We pour into others while allowing ourselves to become spiritually and emotionally drained.

And while serving others is important, we must remember that we cannot carry responsibilities God never intended us to carry alone.

Psalm 55:22 reminds us to cast our burdens upon the Lord because He will sustain us.

That doesn't mean our responsibilities suddenly disappear or every difficult situation immediately changes. It means we can bring our worries, frustrations, and exhaustion before God instead of allowing them to consume us.

You don't have to have the perfect words when you pray. Sometimes all you can say is, “Lord, I'm tired. I need Your help.”

And that's enough to begin an honest conversation with Him.

So if you've been carrying more than you can handle lately, remember that you don't always have to be the strong one. You can lean on God, accept support, and give yourself permission to rest.

Your strength isn't measured by how much you can endure without breaking. Sometimes true strength is recognizing when you need to surrender the weight you've been carrying.
